Cloth
A Labour of L♲ve
Tsukiyo pieces are thoughtfully crafted from upcycled Japanese kimono and obi fabrics, each imbued with a cherished history of wear and love. By repurposing these vintage textiles, we honour traditional craftsmanship while embracing sustainability, reducing waste, and breathing new life into materials that might otherwise be forgotten.
Before upcycling, every kimono and obi is carefully unstitched and laundered using eco-safe, natural detergents. This meticulous process not only ensures the fabric’s readiness for reuse but also assesses its colorfastness, shrinkage, and overall condition.
Most obi and kimono fabrics are dyed with natural pigments and woven with delicate threads, resulting in beautiful variations in color and texture. These inherent features, along with signs of age, patinas, and minor flaws, are embraced as intentional characteristics, celebrating the fabric’s storied past.
To preserve the integrity of these fabrics, careful handling during use and storage is essential. Normal wear, tear, and fading are not flaws but testaments to the journey of each piece. To support the longevity of your items, cloth swatches are provided for future mending and repairs when needed.
